How Do I Fix the Handle Release on My Thule T2 Pro XTR # TH83JV?

Updated 10/01/2025 | Published 08/02/2021

Question:

Hi, The handle release is not working. Nothing happens when i squeeze the handle in an attempt to release the the Rack to the down position. The release handle seems to no longer be connected to the mechanism that allows the Rack to be moved to the various positions. How can this be fixed or does the Rack need to be replaced. it was purchased about 4 months ago.

I reached out to my contact at Thule, and he walked me through the steps to reconnect the mechanism on your Thule T2 Pro XTR # TH83JV. To get the mechanism re-aligned to move the rack to various positions, remove the side screws on the handle then loosen the center one (which will not come out completely). Remove the handle to be sure that the center piece lines up on the backbone. I went ahead and attached a photo to this answer to let you know how the pieces should be aligned.

I have a similar problem with the handle. I just bought the T2 Pro XTR. Gripping the handle is very stiff. With enough power I can click it to move to the usual positions. My wife does not have the strength. Does it need lubrication or loosening of something? Geza

@Geza did you try removing and re-aligning the mechanism as outlined above? That is likely the issue. I would not try to add any kind of lubricant to it.

The center screw on my handle is completely stripped. Is there any possible way to remove the screw without drilling it out which would likely ruin the threads? I am thinking I will just have to leave it in and buy another handle for the extension.

@Fritz have you tried some of the standard methods like using a rubber band or duct tape on the top to get enough grip? There are some kits for it too. That is the only other way without drilling it out.
