Replacement Transmission Cooler for 2017 Ford Explorer
Question:
I have a 2017 explorer with a 3.5l . My transmission cooler , which is Part of the A/C condenser , developed a leak . Is it possible to bypass the original cooler and install a aftermarket cooler as a sole transmission cooler ? And if so , which do you recommend ? FYI , I live in Wisconsin. Not sure if these transmissions have a internal thermostat.

It is possible to bypass the original cooler and install a cooler like the # D33504 Derale Series 8000 Plate-Fin Transmission Cooler. It is typically recommended to install this with your factory cooler to assist in the cooling process. I would not recommend this if you plan on doing some heavy towing.
Since this would be the only transmission cooler, you will want to use a larger model like a class IV or V. The # D33504 Derale I already mentioned is a Class IV plate-fin cooler that is 11" wide x 12" tall x 7/8" deep. For a Class V I recommend the # D13614 Derale Series 9000 Plate-Fin Transmission Cooler. It is 9-3/4" wide x 10-5/8" tall x 1-1/4" deep.
If you would like the option of a fan to ensure optimum airflow then I recommend the # D13960 Derale Hyper-Cool Remote Transmission Cooler. This is larger at 13" wide x 10" tall x 5-5/8" deep because of the additional fan.
Since you have a 2017 Ford Explorer it is important to know that the Derale Insta-dapt radiator adapter fits most Ford Explorers with 5/16" transmission lines, but not all. In some cases, additional fittings or alteration of the OEM lines or hoses may be required for installation.
I have attached a few review videos for your reference.
