Question:

I plan to tow a 2004 chevy impala behind a motor home on a tow dolly. I was thinking of using the MaxxTow Tow Bar Wiring - MT70097 Is there a place under the car for the wiring, such that it can be left in place? that would require a disconnect near the lights so you could get them off when not in use? or a disconnect at the lights themselves. Are disconnects at the lights? Are the magnets strong enough to hold the lights on the car over road bumps and at interstate speeds ? and do they scar the car finish. I chose this produce because it had LEDs in it. I looked at tying into the cars rear lights, but that seemed time comsuming and hard to get to the rear tailight wiring?? Is the a better place to tie into the car lighting system that at the tail light itself? Maybe near the fuse box? which method doyou think this is the best was to do this task? would appreciate answers to these several question. thanks ED

The Peterson # PE26UR Magnetic Tow Lights could be modified by doing some cutting and splicing to work as you describe.

You would attach the connector of the wiring harness at the front of the vehicle and run the wiring under the vehicle. Following the frame member or an existing wiring harness works best. Run the wires to the rear of the vehicle, being sure to avoid any suspension and steering components that might move or anything hot like the exhaust system. Under the vehicle at the rear, look for a grommet. You can usually find one on the underside of the compartment that holds the spare tire. Use a utility knife to poke a hole in the grommet, and cut the wire harness leaving about 2 feet of slack so it can pass through the grommet into the trunk. Make sure to use some silicone to seal around the spot where the wires pass through the trunk.

At this point, you can simply re-piece the harness back together using butt connectors, and leave the lights in the trunk until you need them. When needed, simply open the trunk, pull out the lights and close the trunk. The weatherstripping around the edge of the trunk lid will provide enough padding so that the wires are not damaged, as long as you avoid the latch. Then place the lamps in the desired location.

Or, instead of reconnecting the wires with butt connectors, you can use a 4-pole loop like part # 9653P. Cut the loop in half, and use butt connectors to attach one connector to each end of the lamp wiring harness you cut earlier. This would allow a quick disconnect so you can remove the lamps completely when not needed.

The magnets on the lamps are very strong, and they feature a protective covering that will prevent them from scratching the finish of your vehicle, as long as the surface of the vehicle and the underside of the magnets are kept clean.

This method would be the easiest way to wire the vehicle without tapping into its existing wiring, but keep in mind that once you modify them, they will no longer be covered by the warranty.
