Question:

We have a motorcoach that already tows a 2012 Ford F-150, we utilize a blue ox tow bar and a blue ox patriot 3 brake module. We use a Seven RV to six pole cord to control the lights running, brake, and directional on the F-150. We now want to tow our 2017 ford explorer behind the coach wanting to use the same towbar and patriot three brake module, realizing we will need to purchase the base plates for the explorer and install a six pole receptacle which will then be wired into the explorers light system. it sounds like we need a battery disconnect switch as well? Are there any other components that we need? will you please tell me what part numbers to order?

To swap your flat tow vehicle from a 2012 F-150 to a 2017 Ford Explorer you will only need a few parts for the transition.

First you will need a base plate kit unique to your 2017 Explorer. I recommend the Blue Ox # BX2668 kit which will connect to your Aventa, Aladdin, Alpha, or Anvil Blue Ox tow bars.

You will also need safety cables to keep the towed vehicle connected to your coach in case of a tow bar failure. I would recommend the Roadmaster # RM-645 which are 64” long and rated for 8000 pounds. I like that the connectors are made so they can not bounce off the cable hooks. I also prefer the straight cables compared to coiled – it just looks cleaner when they are all tucked away.

Next you will need a tow bar wiring kit. I recommend the Roadmaster # RM-152-98146-7 Universal wiring kit which includes everything you need to connect your RV's tail, brake, and turn signal lights to your towed car. Diodes prevent feedback and wire your car to operate as a combined system. Includes a 7-way to 6-way straight adapter cord. When you do finally get ready to plug your electrical cables in I would put a little Edelmann # 11755 dielectric grease on those connections. The dielectric grease will keep help keep moisture and corrosion out of your connections.

Your Explorer needs a battery disconnect switch unless you want to grab some wrenches and pop the hood every time you hitch up, or unhitch. You can use the Roadmaster # RM-766 Battery Disconnect kit for Towed Vehicles with Supplemental Braking System.

If the brake lights do not work with the towed vehicle's ignition key turned to the "tow" position, you need a brake light switch kit to provide a signal to the supplemental braking system. You can use the Roadmaster # RM-751000 Universal Stop Light Switch Kit.
