Question:
Hello. I wanted to change out the axle, bearings, hubs and wheels on my harbor freight trailer. I am building a tear on this frame and wanted to up the weight bearing to 2k. I also wanted better tires to allow for highway speeds. Its there a reason I would want to switch from 4 on 4 to 5 on 4 1/2 hubs? Would 4 on 4 be sufficient? Are the following compatible? CE23000 SP-179275 AM31208 20440I-ST-60

I would be happy to help you find the correct replacement axle for your harbor freight trailer.
The CE Smith U-Bolt Kit for Mounting 2,000-lb, Round Trailer Axles - 4" Long U-Bolts - Zinc # CE23000, 4-Leaf Slipper Spring w/ Radius End for 2,000-lb Trailer Axles - 24-5/8" Long # SP-179275, Kenda KR25 ST145R12 Radial Trailer Tire with 12" Aluminum Wheel - 4 on 4 - Load Range D # AM31208, and Dexter Trailer Axle with Idler Hubs - 4 on 4 Bolt Pattern - 60" Long - 2,000 lbs # 20440I-ST-60 are all compatible but you will need to make sure your current axle matches the hub face to hub face and spring center to spring center measurements of the # 20440I-ST-60 to confirm it will fit your trailer frame.
The # 20440I-ST-60 has a hub face to hub face measurement of 60" and a spring center to spring center measurement of 48" as shown in the included diagram. If this matches your current axle this would be a great replacement choice.
There is nothing wrong with the 4 on 4" bolt pattern for a 2000lb axle, and it would be plenty capable for your needs.
If you find that your axle does not match the above dimensions I recommend going with the Timbren Axle-Less Trailer Suspension System with Hubs - 4 on 4 - Regular Tires - 2,000 lbs # A20RS440 instead as it will replace your current axle and leaf spring suspension, and would be quite the upgrade as the progressive main spring does a great job of absorbing road shock and preventing bouncing compared to leaf spring suspension. This system bolts directly to the frame of your trailer and will replace any length axle.
If you went this route you would only need the # AM31208 and you would be all set.
I included videos for the products mentioned for you to take a look at.
