Is Heat Shield Removal Required for 2021 Hyundai Sonata Trailer Hitch
Updated 03/10/2021 | Published 03/06/2021 >
Question:
I have a new 2021 Hyundai Sonata that I want to put a receiver on. The instructions say to the heat shield. Two part question, is this necessary? I have cut other heat shields on my other vehicles. I was hoping for another way around this. Also will this effect the vehicle warranty? We all know the OEM will not put anything that is not needed on a vehicle. Thank you,

Expert Reply:
The trailer hitch options for a 2021 Hyundai Sonata do require removal of the heat shield. I recommend the Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch Receiver part # DT74MR which is a class I hitch with 1-1/4" receiver tube opening. The heat shield mounts on the frame where the trailer hitch will sit so it must go. I have removed several heat shields as it's a pretty common thing to do when installing trailer hitches and have not heard back of any issue. They do serve a purpose yes, but, it's not as critical of a component as you may think. The removal of the heat shield in and of itself won't void any warranty.
