Question:
The 2008 Jeep Commander doesnt have the plug under the dash for a plug and play brake controller installation, so youll need to hard wire the brake controller. What brake controller do you recommend? I have a 7-Way trailer connector at the rear of the vehicle.

You are correct that your 2008 Jeep Commander does not have a factory trailer brake controller port under the dash, so there are a few options to install a 7-way connector.
The first option is a traditional trailer brake controller like the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195. As long as your 7-way connector was factory installed Jeep will have ran a light green brake output wire which you should find coiled up underneath the dash. You will need the Wiring Kit for 2, 4, 6, and 8 Brake Electric Trailer Brake Controllers # 5506 which will provide the power, and ground to the controller, and will need to use a circuit tester like # PTW2993 to find the cold side of the stop light switch which only has power when you apply the brakes. The connections will be as followed:
Factory brake output wire to blue wire of harness included with # 90195
Black wire from # 5506 to black wire of # 90195 harness
White wire from # 5506 to white wire of # 90195 harness
Red wire from # 90195 harness to cold side of stop light switch
If your 7-way connector was not factory installed you will need to use # 10-1-1 to run from the 7-way connector to the trailer brake controller.
The option I recommend is going with the Curt Echo Wireless # C51180 which will plug into your 7-way connector and will not require you to run any wires inside of your Jeep, and will not require you to drill any holes to mount the controller.
I included videos for each of the products mentioned for you to take a look at.
