Does Trailer Breakaway Battery have to be Charged for Truck to Sense Trailer Connection
Updated 02/11/2021 | Published 02/09/2021 >
Question:
I have the break away system on my trailer, it shows it’s charging right now but I’m wondering if it needs to be fully charged to show there’s a trailer attached on my ram 3500

Expert Reply:
The breakaway system battery is not related to whether or not your truck will sense a trailer connection. It actually will look for the slight amperage draw that brake magnets create to determine this. While I strongly recommend waiting to have your breakaway battery fully charged before towing your vehicle will see a connection whether it is or not.
