Question:

I am looking for help on what transmission cooler will work best for a 2010 Rav4 Limited V6. I see there are various different models. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Transmission coolers are not vehicle-specific, so you are free to select any one that will fit into the available space in front of your air conditioning condenser. In the world of coolers bigger is better. The particular Derale cooler you reviewed, the Derale Series 8000 Plate-Fin Class III, part # D13503, is a substantial unit that measures 11 x 8-3/4 x 7/8 inches. This will do an excellent job of cooling your Rav4 transmission. It includes the Derale Insta-Dapt radiator adapter that fits most vehicles with 5/16" transmission lines. (In some cases, additional fittings or alteration of the OEM lines or hoses may be required for installation. We offer several adapter sizes: 5/16 is # D13031; 3/8 is # D13032; 1/2 inch is # D13033).

I have included a product review video and also an installation video for this cooler that should help you become familiar with both the cooler and the installation process. These videos pertain to this specific cooler but they should be helpful no matter which one you select. I have also included an FAQ article that will give you a lot of useful general background.

Before selecting a cooler, you will want to take measurements of the available mounting space in front of your A/C condenser. You can select the largest one that will fit. (Also be sure to take into account the hose fittings on the cooler you choose and the space required for the hoses to be routed; it is important that the hoses not have to make any sharp bends that might interfere with the flow of fluid.) If your Rav4 uses metal transmission fluid lines you will also want to measure their outer diameter with a dial caliper so you know you have the correct fittings. I have included another video showing installation in a Suburban as this demonstrates the process of flaring metal transmission lines.

I have included a link to a product page for plate-fin type coolers, which are the most efficient type.

Although you cannot over-cool your transmission fluid, in extreme cold weather it is a good idea to allow your engine to warm up before driving.

Thanks, Adam. I appreciate the advise on which one to purchase. You added a couple additional things I had not thought about. I had never thought of going bigger. I always just went with the one recommended. One question though. Will going with a larger cooler mean is will be circulating cooler fluids for longer periods of time? IE: Meaning I should allow it to warm up longer in colder weather.Christopher G

If you notice the vehicle having difficulty shifting in cold weather after starts, then letting it warm up a bit would probably help. The RAV4 is a front wheel drive vehicle so the transmission and engine are right together so it should not take long to warm up. Certainly by the time the motor is warm and your heater is blowing warm air, you should be just fine. It is probably not necessary, but it would not hurt either.
