So do both sides light up when the brakes are applied or only the red side

When you apply your brakes, both the red and amber side will light up on the Dual-Face LED Trailer Light # STL52ARB.
This is a very high-quality LED light so you aren't going to have to worry about it burning out, and with 42 diodes it is really bright and easy to see.
