Weight Distribution/Sway Control for 2019 Ford Ranger that Has Built in Sway Control
Updated 12/08/2020 | Published 12/05/2020 >
Question:
I have a 2019 ford ranger which has built in sway control. I will be towing 3000 lb trailer. Could I install a Tuson sway control unit and forego a hitch with sway control? I have been told the truck sway control could conflict with the Tuson sway control and should not have both on my truck/trailer. What is your opinion about this?

Expert Reply:
The electric sway control of your 2019 Ford Ranger is pretty similar to the Tuson Sway Control Unit part # 335TSC-1000 so I would not recommend this system for your truck as it would be a bit redundant. What you have now senses sway and applies the trailer brakes to pull the trailer back basically and stop the sway. The Tuson is a little more advanced as it will apply either side of the trailer's brakes but it's similar enough to what you have that I wouldn't recommend it.
Also in general it's better to have a tow setup that doesn't want to sway instead of trying to stop it once it's started. Proper trailer loading is normally the solution for this as having 10 to 15 percent of total trailer weight as tongue weight is best way to fight sway. But as far as products to help a weight distribution will do a great job as well. Especially if it has a mechanical sway control built into it like the Strait Line part # RP66082 which has a tongue weight range of 200-600 lbs and a sway control designed to fight sway before it starts.
