The correct Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness for a 2008 Nissan Rogue is part # C56033. The black wire must be connected to the battery as that is what provides power to the tail lights on the trailer which is how it is able to isolate itself from the vehicle in the event of a short. This has nothing to do with whether or not the trailer has brakes.
