The brake controller receives 12 volt power from the tow vehicle battery, through the factory tow package wiring or wiring that is put in place during installation of the controller. I have attached the installation instructions for the P2 for reference. Also included is a video showing a typical installation of the P2.
If your vehicle is equipped with a tow package, then you may already have a connector under the dashboard that would allow you to use a plug and play harness that will simplify installation.
If your vehicle does not have a tow package you will need a brake controller install kit to complete the installation in your vehicle; I have included a link to one such item, part # ETBC7. (If your trailer uses a 6-way connector, then instead you will need part # ETBC6.) This kit includes the wiring, circuit breakers and vehicle-side 7-way and 4-way connectors that will send the braking output signal from the P2 to the brakes on your trailer. I included a video link on the ETBC7 also which details installation.
You will also need a vehicle-specific wire harness to provide a 4-way connector on your vehicle, if it does not already have one. You can use the Fitguide page on our site to select the appropriate wiring; a link to this page is included.
