Question:
I installed a wiring kit in a friend’s 2019 Ford Escape, everything fit and plugged in perfectly, but the directionals don’t work, the only thing I did different from the instructions was to pick up a 12 volt source from the power port in the trunk area , instead of running a wire to the battery. Is that an acceptable source, everything else works except for the directionals

It sounds like the harness you installed on your friends 2019 Ford Escape was like the Tekonsha T-One # 118802. I do not recommend picking up power from another source other than the battery as that is a feature that is created to protect the vehicle's harness from a short and could affect any warranty claims if a problem arises.
It is weird that only the turn signals are not working. I would start with verifying that the connectors are full seated into the taillight harness, and that the ground is connected to clean bare metal.
If the connectors and ground are good, I recommend using a circuit tester like # PTW2993 to test the wires from the turn signals going into the converter box and coming from the converter box to the 4-way connector with the turn signals turned on.
If you have power going from the taillights into the converter box but not coming out, you may have a faulty converter box.
I included a video of the T-One # 118802 being installed in a 2019 Ford Escape for you to take a look at.
