Recommended 4-Bike Rack That Can Be Broken Down Into a 2-Bike Rack

Question:

I’m looking for a bike rack with the capacity to carry 4 bikes which include children’s bikes, but easy to change from 4 to 2 bike racks when not going on a family ride. The ideal rack would be the lightest possible tray hitch rack with a compact or slim profile that is easy to use for a woman. Is the Rocky mounts the best option? Is there a cheaper equivalent? I looked at the Saris Superclamp EX, but I read that it doesn’t securely hold a 20 inch kids bike unless it’s by itself, limiting the number of bikes you can load to 3. I need a 4 bike option.

The Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE 4 Bike Platform Rack part # HR1400Z is the best option we have with the features you have in mind. It can be broken down from a 4 to a 2 bike rack when needed, will work with any kids bike when using the part # HRSW-ADP-2, can be folded up flat against the vehicle while not in use, and is cost effective especially when you look at others with these features. I will however say that it is not the lightest but still manageable for one person when split into two.

If you have more in your budget and the kid's bikes have wheels between 20"-29" then you can go with the RockyMounts SplitRail LS 2 Bike Platform Rack part # RKY11404 and the 1 Bike Add-On for RockyMounts SplitRail part # RKY1150 (2) which will be around 20 lbs lighter.
