Thanks! This is an interesting solution I wasn’t aware of. I wonder how the tandem rack would adapt? It says it only works with square bars and the ProBar has a bit of an airfoil shape?

The solution for you is to use the ProBar Evo instead of square bars because as you stated the bottom slots of the square bar won't accommodate your fit. The Thule ProBar Evo has the slots that run the full distance of the bars, so the bars can be cut to a custom length. I recommend the Thule ProBar Evo Crossbars - Aluminum - 69" Long - Qty 2 # TH713600 which will work with both the carriers you mentioned and will give you your desired length. You will need to cut them to your custom length, but this is easily done on the aluminum bars and then you just replace the end cap for the finished end.

Great catch. I missed that, but I do have a solution. What I recommend is using the Aero Style Crossbar T-Slot Fit Kit for Malone Kayak and Surfboard Carriers # MPG915 which will fit within the top channel and will allow you to mount the bracket or rack directly to the channel slot. This combination is the route I would go.
