Can Yakima SweetRoll Kayak Carrier Mount Outside Roof Rack Towers

Updated 05/14/2026 | Published 07/29/2020

Question:

I want to use a Sweet Roll rack to carry a kayak along side a cargo box on my Yakima rack. To fit, I need to put one Sweet Roll saddle on each crossbar to the outside of the tower. Is that an ok configuration? Similarly, I believe I need one side of the box to the outside of the tower on the other side. Everything fits within the length of the cross bars.

Yes, it is fine to mount one side of the Yakima SweetRoll Kayak Carrier with Tie-Downs # Y04074 to the outside of the roof rack towers or feet.

So long as the combined weight of the carrier, cargo box, kayak, and cargo is within the capacity of your roof rack and roof you will be fine with this set up.

I have added a link to a video review as well of the Yakima SweetRoll Kayak Carrier # Y04074.

While it is somewhat OK to mount a kayak carrier mount to the outside of a roof rack (I always place the tie-downs on the inside of the towers), it is not a good idea to mount a cargo box on the outside of the support towers if it is held down by plastic feet as in the case of a Thule box click support. If the box slides due to high speed winds, there is nothing to stop the box from sliding off the roof rack. It is probably OK to mount on the outside with "T" bolts.
