A small camper that's equipped with electric brakes would have a 7-way trailer connector, and in order to actuate the trailer brakes, you will need a brake controller installed. This may seem like a daunting process, but if you take it step by step, it's really not too bad.

The first thing you'll need to do is install a 4 pole trailer wiring harness on the Escape. This will plug inline with the factory wiring harness, to provide power and signal to the taillights on the camper. I'd recommend the # 118566 from Tekonsha.

For a brake controller, the simplest way to go would be the Curt Echo, part # C51180 which would wirelessly communicate with your smart phone, which you'd use to control the brake controller. To install the Echo, you'll need our Brake Controller Installation Kit, part # ETBC7L. The kit includes an adapter to convert the 4 pole provided by the 118566 to a 7-way, as well as the necessary wire, circuit breaker and hardware. The nice thing about the Echo is that there's much less wiring to be done than with a traditional controller, and you don't need to drill any holes in your dash or find a suitable place to mount it.

I've linked to some videos that will help you with the install. The video shows the Echo being installed on an Expedition, but since the installation isn't vehicle specific, you should still find it helpful.
