Tandem Trailer Leaf Spring Replacement

Updated 02/18/2020 | Published 02/17/2020

Question:

I have a double axel trailer with double eye leaf springs with equalizers in between. I noticed that the shackle straps are in a vertical orientation and the fenders are getting close to the tires. This is with the trailer unloaded. All the pictures I have seen show the shackle straps in more of a diagonal position. Is it likely that my springs are worn out? Also, this is an 18 ft. car hauler type 10,000 lb. gross weight trailer. The springs are 5 leaf. You sell a 4 leaf, same length, 2,500 lb. spring and a 5 leaf 3,000 lb. spring. Would either of these be acceptable if I dont intend to ever go over 10,000 gross weight with the trailer? Would it be a softerinch ride with the 5,000 lb. springs? Thank you.

Given what you've described I'd say your trailer is ready. You can definitely replace the 5 leaf spring with a 4 leaf solution as long as the capacity and the length is correct. That said we have 5 leaf options available too.

When measuring your leaf springs you will want to measure from the center of one eye to the center of the other eye. Assuming that measurements is 25-1/4" the 5-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 6,000-lb Trailer Axles - 25-1/4" Long # e34SR would be a fine option.

Included is a video overview as well.
