I have a solution for you, but since this is not the standard method of mounting a rear-view mirror of any type, any solution will potentially require some modification that could potentially void the manufacturer's warranty. I recommend using the CIPA Rearview Mirror # CM33000 which you can use the existing screw hole to attach it to the wood stringer in the method you've mentioned. You will need to find a wood screw the appropriate length to secure this mirror to that stringer, but this is the mirror we have available most suited for this application and is the least likely to have the warranty voided using this method.
If you're looking for a convex mirror, you can use the CIPA Comp II # CM11081, but it would require modification of the screw holes to accommodate larger wood screws-which would void the warranty.
