Why is it necessary to trim the heat shield for the instalattion?

The heat shield will need to be trimmed so that you can bolt up the side brackets of the hitch to the bottom of your vehicle frame. If the heat shield was not removed it would not provide a solid surface for the hitch to attach to.
Check out the installation instructions link I attached that shows the area where the heat shield will need to be trimmed.
