Supplemental Braking System for Towed Vehicle Travelling Steep Hills

Updated 02/17/2025 | Published 01/21/2020

Question:

Thank you so much! I was leaning to the SMI Duo. I'm going with the Roadmaster Falcon 2 AT and base plate and have the wiring kit, smart diode kit and battery disconnect on the way as well. We'll be hooking to a 7-pin on a Newmar Ventana LE. The toad is 2019 Ford Edge ST. Are there other parts in addition to the Duo I'll need? I believe it already has a battery charging line. Maybe a brake light switch? I don't know, please advise.

For an application where steeper inclines will be traveled on the Invisi-Brake # RM-8700 would not be my first choice for a supplemental braking system since the braking pressure when you apply the tow vehicle's brakes will always be the same pressure. Instead I'd recommend the DUO part # SM99251 which is a similar type of system but uses an inertia sensor to detect how hard you are applying the tow vehicle brakes and applies a proportionate amount of braking to the towed vehicle's brakes. The install is overall easier than the Invisi-Brake too.

The second line splice you mentioned in the video of this on the 2015 model would be the same on your 2019 model as well. I attached linked to the install video for you to check out too.

To install the DUO you do not need any additional components. A brake light switch is not needed.

Just purchased an invisibrake from you folks. While going over instructions / description I became concerned about the installation on our 24 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland (has a battery installed under drivers AND passenger seat. Also questioned the systems use on long grades where exhaust brake / brake lights would be on pretty much constantly. Saw an older answer by you stating that the invisibrake would NOT be the best choice when using on long grades???? Since we do large percent of our travel in the mountians this is a major issue. Do you still feal that way ? Do you still recomend the DUO part # SM99251. My install is on hold until I hear from you. Thank you Robert D McAllister [email protected]

@RobertM So the invisibrake applies towed vehicle brakes when the brake lights of the tow vehicle come on. Engine brakes don't typically activate the brake lights so it won't burn up the brakes of the towed vehicle like previously thought.

@JamesonC James, I'm 98% sure my brake lights are activated by the exhaust brake? Example: while coming down 550 into Silverton, CO (steep long grade) my son (following in another vehicle) ask why I was braking all the way down the pass. He knows how to descend long mountain grades but had never followed us on a grade. I hadn't touched the brakes until I pulled off the road. The exhaust brake WAS engaged and active all the way from the top of the pass until I came to a stop. More then a bit concerned now, thinking I purchased the wrong braking system. We spend a great deal of time on mountain passes so any braking issue is a HUGE concern. I have opened the box to get / review the instructions / operations. Nothing else disturbed / unpacked. That is when I became concerned. Read conflicting responses. Ran across your post and it made the most sense based on the instruction / operator's manual??? Not sure what to do???

@RobertM Do you have air brakes on your motorhome? I am thinking the Air Force One would be better if so.
