First, I did some research and found that the manual transmission models of the 2000 Ford Mustang can be flat towed as is but automatic models need a drive shaft coupling to be flat towed. Consult your vehicle owners manual for additional information.
If you determine you can flat tow your Mustang you will first need base plates which provide a secure attachment point for a tow bar. For your Mustang you can use XL base plates # 466-1. Please note these base plates will not fit the Cobra SVT models. There are currently no base plates for the Cobra SVT models.
Next, you will need a compatible tow bar. The most popular tow bar for XL base plates is the Roadmaster Falcon 2, # RM-520. I have included a link to the installation details and a link to a video review for you.
Along with the tow bar, you will need safety cables. I recommend coiled cables # RM-643. The coiled design helps keep the coils off of the ground.
You will also need a lighting solution to activate the tail lights on the Mustang when it is being towed. If you will be towing the vehicle frequently, you can use diode kit # RM-154. If the towing vehicle has separate brake and turn signals, you will also need Brite-Lite converter # RM-732. If you will not be towing it frequently then I recommend a magnetic kit like # RM-2120.
Most states now require a supplemental braking system on the vehicle being flat towed. The easiest system to set up and use is the Even Brake # RM-9400. This is a proportional system that applies the vehicle brakes in proportion to how much the towing vehicle is braking. Proportional systems are the safest way to stop and they reduce wear and tear on both vehicles.
I have included a helpful link to our series of FAQ articles on flat towing for you. You will want to consult the vehicle owners manual to determine if you can flat tow this vehicle and on the proper procedure for flat towing.
