The Buyers Products Magnetic Mounting Plates # 3378895404 that you referenced measure exactly 3-1/2" x 3-1/2". These feature strong 3M tape strips on the backside that securely attach to the aluminum body on your vehicle. The magnetic top would then be used to mount magnetic lights like the Blazer # C4850AW you were looking at.
This will provide a really secure connection that will not fly off in the wind during travel. Both the self-adhesive squares and the magnetic light are designed specifically for this application and are built to withstand highway speeds and crosswinds. Before sticking the plates to the vehicle just be sure to give the mounting area a thorough cleaning to ensure it's free of any debris, grease, etc.
I have attached a couple short video reviews that you can check out as well.
