Question:

I would like to mount the box so the lid is on top and opens like a trunk. Will the lid stay sealed and will the lid stay open in that position? Do I need to add length to the chain to use in that position - so the lid folds over a bit from verticle and stays open?

The lid seal of the DeeZee Specialty Series Underbody Toolbox # DZ75 would work really well with the lid on the top of the box. It arguably would seal better in this orientation. The chain is also long enough to allow the lid to open up beyond totally vertical too so it wouldn't want to fall down and shut as soon as you let it go. It doesn't have any shocks or struts to hold open though.

We have a similar dimension UWS box part # UWS01022 that was designed to open up like you are wanting and has shocks to hold the lid open when needed which might be more of what you'd want. It measures 48" long x 20" wide x 20" deep. The DeeZee measures 48" Long x 20" wide x 18" tall for comparison.
