Procedure for Flat Towing 2016 Ram with All 4 Wheels On Ground

Updated 05/05/2026 | Published 09/22/2019

Question:

When towing do I lock the steering wheel or shut off and remove the key. I was told the wheels will still turn even with the steering wheel locked. Confused ?

I took a look at the online version of the owner's manual for your 2016 Ram 4x4 and it lays out a pretty detailed procedure to follow before flat towing the truck with all 4 wheels on the ground. You will want to reference your copy of the manual for specifics but you will need to shift the transfer case into NEUTRAL for both the automatic and manual transmissions. The automatic transmission models need to then be shifted into PARK and the manual transmission model into gear (NOT in NEUTRAL).

After following the steps listed under the "Recreational Towing" section of the manual the engine should be turned off and the key removed. The steering wheel should be in the unlocked position to allow for proper tracking behind your RV during travel.

In order to flat tow your truck you will need a base plate kit, a tow bar, safety cables, a lighting solution, and a supplemental braking system. If you can tell me what model Ram you have (1500/2500/3500) I will be happy to recommend specific parts if you don't have them already.
