Using Roadmaster Tow Dolly to Pull 2009 Mini Cooper
Updated 09/23/2019 | Published 09/21/2019 >
Question:
So, Ive read that there are clearance issues due to the low stance of the mini and fascia. Can I lower the hitch/angle? Also heard I shouldnt use a tow dolly because the steering wheel doesnt lock. Is a steering wheel tie-down legitimate or are there dollys that are designed for non-locking steering? If not, aluminum car hauler? That seems extreme?

The angle of the Roadmaster Tow Dolly with Electric Brakes # RM-2050-1 cannot be adjusted. With that being said the Roadmaster Tow Dollies are designed so that they can handle vehicles like your Mini Cooper that sit lower to the ground. When we have reached out to them before regarding this concern they suggested visiting a local U-Haul location and loading the vehicle up onto one of their dollies. The U-Haul models and the Roadmaster dollies share very similar ground clearance dimensions. You can use the U-Haul dolly as a test to make sure this one will work well.
Then for actually towing your Mini Cooper with a tow dolly you will definitely want to have the steering wheel locked to prevent the wheels from moving around during turns. If the steering wheel doesn't lock what you can do is simply wrap the seat belt a couple times around it and then buckle it in place. Then pull the seat belt all the way out so that it locks into place when retracted. This will safely prevent it from turning during travel.
I recommend consulting the owner's manual for your Mini for any additional restrictions or guidelines when it comes to towing.
