Question:

I don't find a video for installation in an Astro van, but I'm studying further to see if this will be simple or not. Can you share any details that will help? Thanks for the great Hidden Hitch video on the Astro, too, as I'm after one of those as well. I don't plan to haul much with the Astro, but when I do, I want it safe.

In order to install a brake controller on a 1987 Chevy Astro, there are a few parts you are going to need. First, you need to install a 4-Way trailer wiring harness, # 18252. I have included a link to a video that shows a typical installation. You will need to use the included circuit tester to test the van wiring because it will most likely not match color for color with the vehicle in the video.

After you have installed the 4-Way, you will need to install a 4 and 7 Way installation kit, # ETBC7. This kit provides the 7-Way connector at the back of the vehicle, all the wiring needed, and accessories so you can wire in the brake controller. I have included links to an FAQ and a video that explain the ETBC7 installation. It is not a difficult installation, but it can be time consuming.

Finally, you will need a brake controller. I recommend the Tekonsha P2, # 90885, which is the updated version of the Prodigy that you referenced. The P2 has a wider range of mounting options and can be used with electric over hydraulic systems or electric brake systems. It is one of our most popular brake controllers because it is easy to set up and easy to use.
