bought thule vertex 2 bike rack. also purchased th538xt and thsl2 at same time. what do i do to key them the same

You need matching lock cores and keys for the lock and cable. What you can do is get a lock cylinder with the same key number as either the lock or the cable and install it in the device so that the keys will match.
For example, if you have lock/key N181 then you would use lock cylinder # THLOCKN181.
The key number is also on the face of the lock cylinder. You will also need change key # 853-1251 to remove and install lock cylinders.
The other option is to order a pre-made set, # TH450200 that also includes keys. Install the lock cylinders in this kit in both devices rather than the ones that come with them. The change key is included with this set.
