Troubleshooting a Trailer DC Strong Arm TW9000 Winch That Quit Working

Updated 02/28/2012 | Published 02/27/2012

Question:

Hi Boat a newer boat with a DC TW9000 Strong Arm trailer winch.Unfortunately it just stopped working .It is not the battery so it must be the wiring harness assembly.I see the harness has a 80 amp circuit breaker but where is it? Is it the two plastic holders on top of the positive lead?Cant seem to pry the unit open without damaging. Thanks in advance

The breaker assembly is the two white box looking deals that are attached on the wire near the positive battery post. I spoke with my contact at Dutton-Lainson and she seemed to think that the problem is most likely on the ground wire. You might try checking to see if it is loose or if there is corrosion where it attaches and fix as necessary.

You cannot open the breakers on the wiring assembly as they are sealed. If they trip because of excessive draw they should reset themselves once they cool back down.

You could check to see if there is voltage before and after the white breakers to determine if they are in fact at fault. You would want a circuit tester like our # PTW2993 to do this.
