With the 2.4L you could have the Trailer Tow package or the Off Road package which makes your towing capacity 2,000 pounds according to what I've found. If you don't have either of those packages then you're limited to only 1,000 pounds.
The parts I recommend for your Jeep are the Draw-Tite hitch, part # 75712, and Tekonsha wiring harness, part # 118539. The hitch has the highest capacity among the selection that fits your Compass so you'll get the strongest available and this wiring harness has the highest maximum amp draw giving you less chance of overloading the wiring. For the ball mount I've linked our selection and an article to help you figure out the rise or drop you need with your trailer.
The videos and other links are attached to this page in the "Miscellaneous Media" section. You'll also find the installation instructions for the hitch and wiring harness on the same part of the page.
