I am looking at the diagram and it says to connect positive to negative, is that correct

Yes, wiring a battery in series does require connecting a positive post to a negative post, as you can see in the accompanying diagram. Following this diagram precisely shows you exactly how to wire batteries either in series - to double the output of two 12 volt batteries to get 24 volts - or in parallel - which maintains the 12 volt output but will last longer.
