Is 247 Degrees Fahrenheit Too High For Transmission Fluid While Towing With a Chevy Traverse

Updated 06/20/2019 | Published 06/19/2019

Question:

I have a 2018 Chevy Traverse that came with a transmission cooler and I had a towing package added. When towing the temperature goes up to 247. When not towing the temperature goes up to 194. Are these temperatures too high? I do live in central Florida.

The transmission fluid temperature you have of 247 degrees Fahrenheit while towing in your 2018 Chevy Traverse is on the high side. The transmission is not going to immediately blow up so to speak because of this but over time it can cause more wear to occur which then degrades the life of your transmission.

I know you said that you already have a transmission cooler but it may not be larger or efficient enough for the trailer you are towing with your vehicle or the climate for that matter. Therefore, I recommend installing an additional, supplemental transmission cooler, the Derale Series 8000 Plate-Fin Transmission Cooler Kit part # D13504 with the Derale Snap-In Radiator Adapter Fitting for GM part # D13035. This cooler is of a plate-fin design and fairly large so it should then reduce your transmission fluid temperatures to a safe level, preferably around 195 degrees Fahrenheit.
