what is better, the pintle or the gooseneck for non-semi applications?

A pintle hook combo like the Curt Pintle Hook with 2-5/16" Hitch Ball # C45922 and a gooseneck are very different applications and generally aren't comparable because they require such different applications and configurations for both your trailer and truck.
Assuming you have a truck that is set up for both, a gooseneck application will absolutely be the way to go because it will be a more cost-effective option and will give you better ride quality when towing.
You didn't state your truck specifically, so as an example I'll use a 2015 Ram 2500. To tow with a pintle hook you added a 2-1/2 inch trailer hitch, the Curt # C15809 along with Curt Pintle Hook with 2-5/16" Hitch Ball - Channel Mount # C45922, Shank # C45917, and Pins and Clips # C45925. This would be an effective way to tow but also require numerous parts and be a more rugged ride, relative to a gooseneck set up.
Comparatively, the same truck could install the B&W Turnoverball Underbed Gooseneck Trailer Hitch w/ Custom Installation Kit # BWGNRK1384, which has a 30,000 lb capacity and does not require any other parts. So it would be a more cost-effective option and a gooseneck coupler will attach directly to the ball creating a more stable and comfortable towing experience.
I have added links to video reviews for you to check out as well.
