Would it be better to use this adapter set or the purpose built model RR31102 for my RR HD cross bars?

The Rhino-Rack Foxwing Awning Mounting Kit # RR31105 is designed for use with smaller square bars like what Thule has. Since you have the Rhino-Rack Heavy-Duty Crossbars you need to use the Relocation Kit # RR31102 which was designed specifically for these crossbars. The Rhino-Rack HD bars are too big to fit with the mounting kit 31105 that you referenced.
