Question:

I have a 2011 Nissan Xterra. It has the factory roof rack with 2 cross bars. I am looking at buying a Rhino Rack Batwing. Can the Batwing be mounted to the Nissan rack or do I need to buy some different cross bars or replace the whole rack? I am not opposed to any of these options.

The Rhino-Rack Batwing Awnings like the Driver's Side # RR33100 that you were looking at require that the crossbars extend past the mounting feet (or raised rail) on a vehicle's roof. This is needed so that the hardware and awning itself don't interfere with the vehicle when mounted.

Since the factory crossbars for your Nissan Xterra sit flush with the raised side rails, you will need to replace them with aftermarket bars in order to use the Batwing Awning.

To do this I recommend the Rhino-Rack 46" Vortex Aero Crossbars # RRVA118B-2 along with the SX Series Legs # RRSX008. This will provide you with sleek aerodynamic black crossbars that give you the needed extension and capacity to securely mount the awning.
