Question:

I hooked up a brake controller in my 1999 chevy silverado the trailer brakes only work when i do it by hand and not when i hit the brake peddle any help would be nice thanks

It sounds like the red wire coming out of the brake controller is not connected properly. The Red wire should be connected to the brake switch, this wire will only have a signal when the brake pedal is pressed. You will need to use a circuit tester like part # PTW2993 to test for this wire.

I have linked instructions and a video installation of the Draw-Tite Brake Controller # 5504 on a different vehicle, but the process is the same.
