Parts Needed to Tow Trailer with 7-Way Blade Connector with 7-Pin Connector Off of Commercial Dump

Published 03/19/2019

Question:

hi Jon, Great source, I am ordering that and another part. Would you have the commercial 7 pin plug with the wires already installed also? Just easier (if you do) And I want to put a brake controller (electric trailer brakes) into the dump truck cab. It is a 2006 Volvo VHD60 Dump truck. Please let me know, then I will complete the order. thanks

We do have exactly what you are needing to tow a trailer with the standard 7-Way blade with your commercial dump. To combine the turn/brake signals from your tow vehicle you simply need to use the Roadmaster Brite-Lite Wiring Converter # RM-732. After making those connections use a 7-Way blade connector like the Hopkins Endurance # HM47210 for a dedicate connector for the trailer.

Just connect the following wires from the Hopkins Endurance to the following functions on your tow vehicle:

White wire - Ground
Yellow wire - Left turn (Yellow wire from converter)
Green wire - Right turn (Green wire from converter)
Brown wire - Taillight
Red wire - Auxillary power lead
Blue wire - Electric brake
Purple wire - Backup / reverse

We do have a brake controller for your 2006 Volvo VHD60 Dump Truck as well as a 7-Pole connector with part # PK11720 but unfortunately we don't have any 7-Pole connectors with wiring already connected. I have attached a photo of what the typical wiring layout is for a 7-Pole for you to reference. When it comes to the brake controller I have 2 different recommendations for you and it all depends on how you want to connect the brake controller into your dump truck. The Hayes Air Actuated Trailer Brake Controller # HA100400C ties right into the air brakes on your truck so that you get the exact amount of braking from your truck applied to your trailer. This also features a manual override and it is compatible with electric over hydraulic applications. For more of a typical brake controller application I recommend the Tekonsha Primus IQ # TK90160. This uses an internal inertia sensor to determine how much braking power to send back to the brakes on your trailer. It also features a manual override but can only be used for electric brakes. Attached are review videos for both controllers that you can reference as well.
