Universal Flat Towing Equipment Needed to Tow a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Future Vehicles

Updated 02/27/2019 | Published 02/26/2019

Question:

what do you recommend for a universal flat tow setup. I have a 2002 four winds majestic 450. Already have a hitch setup and tow trailer with atvs. Want to tow 2004 Jeep grand cherokee for now. But want a setup that I can use for other vehicles as we wont have the jeep forever. Not looking to spend a lot of money. What do you suggest?

I have the perfect solution for flat towing your 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee and then being able to use most of the equipment for the next vehicle you decide to flat tow.

Basically the only part that you may not be able to reuse is the base plate kit because these are vehicle specific. For your application I recommend using the Demco Classic Base Plate Kit # DM9518072 because it is the most cost-effective base plate kit and it easily attaches to a Demco tow bar. Since Demco has adapters which make their tow bars compatible with just about every base plate kit out there this is an added benefit that should help you avoid purchasing a new tow bar.

For your application I recommend the Commander II # DM9511012 which has a 6K weight rating. If you plan on towing a heavier vehicle then you may be interested in using the Dominator # DM9511008 rated for 7.5K or the Excali-Bar III # DM9511013 rated for 10.5K. Since most people leave their tow bar stored at the back of their motorhome I also recommend protecting it with the storage cover # DM9523042 and locking hitch pin # DM9523066.

The Heavy Duty Magnetic Tow Lights # TL21RK are what you want to use for wiring as these are easily transferable between vehicles.

All of the braking systems are about the same price so it really boils down to which one is easiest to switch between vehicles. The Blue Ox Patriot 3 # BLU37TR takes the cake for that one. Not only is it a portable system but it is also compatible with active power assist braking systems.

Even though the Demco tow bars have some built-in adjustability you may still need an adapter. I have attached our list of adapters as well as a link to a helpful article that will help you determine if you need one or not.

Please be sure to also reference your owner's manual on flat towing each vehicle to ensure that you don't damage it as there are often specific guidelines that need to be followed.
