Toyota rav4 2017, can I start engine while block heater plug in? How to know if block heater working? Thanks

Expert Reply:
You'll want to unplug the block heater before you start the engine for a couple reasons. Mainly so that you don't accidentally drive off with it plugged in, but also so that the extension cord would possibly get wrapped up in moving parts or hot components. Having the block heater on while the engine is running won't necessarily cause any adverse effects though.
If you feel near the block when it's on you'll feel it warm.
