Recommendation to Raise Trailer Frame Height for Clearance From Axle

Published 12/19/2018

Question:

leaf spring center bolt modification for added clearance My current springs are under-rated for my axle and I need more clearance in general. I already have existing hangers welded in place on my trailer. It appears that the center of the 7k double eye leaf spring contains a bolt to keep all the leafs together. Is it possible to remove that bolt and add a spacer with a longer bolt? This would push my axle farther away from my frame. I would also need taller U-bolts.

You cannot raise your trailer by the method you described. You would instead need to replace your hangers with longer ones or use a system that adds height like the Lippert Components Center Point by Trailair Air-Ride Suspension Upgrade - Tandem Axle # LC1565391 which increases the ride height of your frame by 2 inches.

Typically, if you need more clearance from your axle, the Dexter Trailer Springs Over-Under Conversion Kit # K71-385-00 for 3 inch axles is the best route to go. This will flip your axles to put the leaf springs on top of the axle and raise your trailer by the 3 inch axle diameter plus the height of the leaf spring stack. It appears in the attached photo you have already done this.

Unfortunately you cannot further increase your trailer height by adding a spacer and longer bolt to this system which it sounds like is what you are seeking to do. That would put far too much weight on a couple bolts not rated for that weight capacity and put the spring seat further from the leaf spring which is what helps disperse the weight correctly.
