Hitch & Wiring for 2018 BMW 5 Series xDrive for Towing Utility Trailer

Published 12/05/2018

Question:

Is there a hitch for the 2018 BMW 530i with the XDrive? We want to use a small steel utility trailer for transporting yard supplies like mulch and topsoil. Our trailer does not have lights but it is wide enough that it will block the car's taillights. What do we do about that?

We do offer a hitch for your 2018 BMW 530i with the xDrive system, Curt's 1-1/4-inch Class I model # C11478 with which you can use ball mount # C45521. You will need to add the hitch ball, one of the size required by the coupler on your trailer. Check the coupler for a sticker or stamping in the housing that indicates the required ball size, either 2-inch # A-82 or 1-7/8-inch # A-80. You will also need either a hitch pin # F-4 or a hitch lock # C23517 to secure the ball mount in the hitch.

If the trailer does block the car's lights (or if your pile of mulch does) you will need to add a lighting kit to keep other drivers apprised of your intentions. This will require a 4-pole trailer wiring harness and a set of magnetic lights. For trailer wiring I recommend the ZCI Zero Contact harness # 119250KIT which does not requireing splicing into the vehicle's wiring. The ZCI uses snap-on magnetic sensors so you do not have to splice anything, and this feature also makes it possible and easy to remove the harness so that you can install it on another vehicle in the future. Install videos for both are linked to help you decide which type of installation you prefer to do.

With the wiring in place it will be a snap to plug in a set of inexpensive magnetic lights like # RM-2120 or # TL21RK.
