Is the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Needed for a Triple Axle Trailer If I Have a Factory Brake Controller
Published 11/29/2018 >
Question:
You guys recommend the Prodigy P2 Brake Controller part # 90885 for triple axle towing. What happens if i have a integrated brake controller in my truck? Do i still need this, or will the brake controller in my 2017 duramax control my trailer fine without it?

I don't have any specifications on the factory integrated brake controller (ITBC) in your 2017 Chevy Silverado 2500/3500 but one would have to think it is capable of handing a triple axle trailer. However, I would play this on the safe side and call your local dealer to confirm. If the factory integrated brake controller is capable of handling a triple axle trailer then you will not need to use the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Trailer Brake Controller part # 90885.
However, many people often install an aftermarket brake controller on their truck with a factory integrated brake controller as most aftermarket brake controllers perform much better. They also offer more features and settings to adjust for the best towing experience. If this is a route you would like to take then in order to use the aftermarket brake controller with the factory integrated brake controller you will need to follow the instructions listed in the attached help article. It just entails attaching a few wires is all.
