I have the same issue as Andy, my reservoir cap leaks as well. what is the floating plug looking piece that is in the reservior for?

The floating plug looking piece is actually the diaphragm insert that is in your master cylinder's cap. For one reason or another these rubber inserts occasionally fall out of the master cylinder caps and the simple solution is to get a replacement cap.
