Benefits of Using Electric Fan that Only Covers Portion of Cooler

Updated 07/17/2018 | Published 07/15/2018

Question:

Hello, Due to space available, I am using this as a puller for my transmission cooler. The cooler sits in front of the vehicle radiator, but only blocks about 1/5 of the radiator. I have a couple of questions. 1. The space available does not allow me to purchase a fan that covers the entire transmission cooler. Is the fan only covering a part of the cooler still somewhat efficient? 2. Will the puller motor that will push the air towards the vehicle radiator have an adverse affect on the radiator? 3. I have 3 12V outlets in the vehicle, can I use the switched outlet to power the fan? I would not continue its attachment to the outlet, just use it for the toggle.

The Derale 8" Tornado Electric Fan # D16508 referenced in your question can be used as a pusher or puller. The fact that the fan will only cover a portion of the transmission cooler will still provide benefit, as the fluid from the affected area will be dispersed from there through the tubes and lines. So while the fan is only providing additional airflow to part of the cooler itself, it will still have a positive effect on the entire system.

Pushing air towards the radiator will not have any adverse effect on the radiator.

Using the switched outlet like you described is perfectly fine. I do recommend considering a temperature controlled option like the Derale # D18735 so you don't have to always worry about switching the fan on. This will automatically control the radiator fan so that it turns on when fluid temperatures exceed 180 degrees and then back off when it drops to 165 degrees to save power.

I have attached the installation instructions so you can see exactly how it works.
