Boat Trailer Keeps Having Tire Blowouts on One Side of the Trailer

Updated 07/13/2018 | Published 07/12/2018

Question:

I have a boat trailer and I have blown out the same side twice within a week times. What would cause this? The other side has the same tire and it looks great

The fact that you are having blowouts on the same side repeatedly could indicate that, for whatever reason, the trailer is heavier on that one side. Or it could mean that there is a problem with the suspension on that side or that something is out of spec in the running gear (hubs or spindle).

All of these things would increase the amount of heat generated by the tire. Excessive heat leads to tire failure. If you have ever hit a curb or something else then that could have caused damage to the running gear or suspension even if it looks fine. I would have the trailer looked at by a reputable shop that works on trailers to determine if there is anything off on that one side.

If not then it could just be coincidence. The replacement tire you used after the first blowout could have had dry rot issues if it was not properly stored prior to it being purchased. Also make sure you keep your trailer tires inflated to the maximum psi indicated on the tire. Trailer tires can only carrier their max rated load if inflated to the psi on the tire.
