I have a 2014 Ram 1500 and installed a curt brake controller. Without a trailer hooked everything works fine but when I plug in the trailer it only works on manual and the pedal does nothing

When a brake controller does not work with the brake pedal but works with the manual override lever that means that there's an issue with the stoplight circuit (red wire) of the controller as this is the circuit that's needed to tell the controller that you are stopping the trailer.
Typically on vehicles like your 2014 Ram 1500 that have brake controller pre-wiring and an install harness like part # C51453 is used this issue indicates that the problem is the brake light circuit on the vehicle. Most commonly this means that there is a blown third brake light.
