Sounds like you are looking for a door latch like the part # 295-000019 which has an external latch similar to what your door currently has but also has an internal latch that allows you to open it from the inside as well. This installs into latch cutouts that are 2-1/2" wide x 3-1/2" tall to 3" wide x 4" tall and fits doors that are 1-1/4" to 1-1/2" thick.

This product is dimensions: 3.47" wide x 4.28" tall, please confirm measurements to ensure fit.
