Does Alternator Amperage Need to be Regulated for Charging Batteries on Trailer

Updated 04/03/2018 | Published 03/31/2018

Question:

Im installing a dual battery system in my truck with a deep cycle that will power radios, winch, lights, etc. I have a battery isolator, but is there a product that will limit or regulate the amperage from the alternator to properly charge the deep cycle battery?

Expert Reply:

Voltage regulators are the mechanisms that alternators use to prevent over charging a vehicle battery. Since your truck alternator already has that you would not need to regulate that amperage again for your trailer battery. Your isolators and batteries would be fine as-is.
