Question:

I have a 2016 Beetle convertible and greatly in need of an attachment to put a bike rack on it. I have a Smart Scoot which is like an electric bike but the width is 22 inches and is three wheels. It weighs around 35 pounds. I need a ride to attach to a hitch that it’s not high up so that I can get it off myself. Could you please help me?

Based on your information, I recommend the Curt Class I Receiver Hitch, Item # C11354. It is a confirmed fit for your 2016 Beetle convertible. (But it does not fit R-Line models or those with the AdBlue DEF tank). It has a maximum gross trailer weight capacity of 2,000-lbs and a maximum tongue weight capacity of 200-lbs. No drilling is required and it mounts snugly with a bolt-on installation.

Because of the unique design of your SmartScoot, especially its 22 inch width and three wheels, I have only a cargo carrier to recommend, the Curt # C18110. It is a lightweight carrier and will fit your hitch. It's dimensions are 47 inches long x 19 inches wide so it may not be wide enough. However, it is basically a flat platform with no walls so it is a possibility.

You will additionally need some Erickson # EM05729 tie down straps to hold your scooter.

Your 2016 Beetle will have towing weight limits so be sure and check your owner's manual for capacities and recommendations.
